Will Buffalo, New York Ever Get an MLB or NBA Team?

As of my last knowledge update in August 2023, Buffalo, New York, does not currently have a Major League Baseball (MLB) or National Basketball Association (NBA) team. However, the city has a rich sports culture, primarily centered around the NFL's Buffalo Bills and the NHL's Buffalo Sabres. The prospects for securing an MLB or NBA franchise involve several critical factors, including market size, existing teams, stadium and arena requirements, and community support.

Market Size

Buffalo is a city with a relatively smaller market compared to other major sports cities that currently host MLB and NBA teams. These larger markets often generate more revenue, making them more attractive to franchises.

Existing Teams

The proximity of other major sports cities like Toronto, Cleveland, and New York City can also affect the viability of a new MLB or NBA franchise in Buffalo. These neighboring cities can draw fans and resources, making it challenging for a new team to establish itself.

Stadium and Arena

The physical infrastructure for hosting an MLB team would need to be suitable, which could involve constructing or renovating a stadium. For an NBA team, a modern arena would be required. The financial feasibility and community support for such projects would be crucial.

Interest and Support

Local fan base interest in baseball and basketball, along with the willingness of potential ownership groups to invest, would significantly influence the likelihood of an MLB or NBA team coming to Buffalo. After all, community support and enthusiasm for sports are key drivers of success for any new franchise.

A Historical Note: The Buffalo Braves

Buffalo had a brief NBA presence in the 1970s, with the Buffalo Braves playing from 1970 to 1978. Frustratingly, the team never managed to secure games at the Buffalo Aud because the venue’s seating capacity made it impractical for hosting NBA games. However, Buffalo served as the affiliate for the Toronto Blue Jays during the 2020 MLB season. The team played most of their home games in Buffalo at Sahlen Field, home to the Buffalo Bisons, the Triple-A affiliate of the Blue Jays.

Current MLB Presence

However, Buffalo is not without baseball presence. The Toronto Blue Jays currently play some of their home games in Buffalo during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. This arrangement, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, has given the city a taste of what it could be like to host a top-tier baseball team.

Minor League Attendance Records

Buffalo has a significant presence in minor league baseball through the Buffalo Bisons, who set a minor league attendance record alongside the Louisville Bisons (also known as the Louisville Grayhawks) during their attempt to secure an MLB team.

While it is challenging to predict the future with certainty, past discussions and current fan interest indicate that the possibility of Buffalo hosting an MLB or NBA team is not entirely out of the question. Any definitive plans or announcements would depend on emerging developments and community support.
