In my opinion, it is essential to be honest and tell the truth during the interviews. Many people take one or two years off to prepare for IIT-JEE. So, you might not be the only one in your college with a year's gap.

For most companies, a one- or two-year gap doesn't matter. What they look for is your present skills, aptitude, problem-solving, and coding abilities. So, be confident during your interviews when you tell them about the year's gap. I also took a year off after 12th for the same reason and didn't qualify for IIT. So, when the interviewer asked, I told him the truth. To give a positive sense to my whole answer, I also added that preparing for IIT-JEE during the drop year made my concepts stronger, which helped a lot during my bachelors, which was also true.
