Finding My Sweet Spot: A Journey from Accounting to Customer Service
Why Did You Choose Your Current Job? Are You Happy with Your Choice?
My journey to my current job was anything but conventional. I started out training to work in accounting, yet here I am, part of a customer service team that's become a better fit for me. The transition wasn't without its challenges, but ultimately, it has brought me joy and a sense of fulfillment.
From Accounting to Customer Service
Accounting, for many, is seen as a mechanical and often isolating profession. The pressure is high, and the rewards aren't always tangible. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't any different. I was fired from my previous job during the probation period due to my supervisor's excessive scrutiny. The constant feeling of failing and not being good enough was incredibly stressful. Being shown the door was a relief, but also a wake-up call that perhaps my career path needed a change.
Discovering a Better Fit
After my abrupt departure, I began applying for jobs again. The interview process for my current role was a two-step process: a phone interview followed by an in-person one. To my surprise, I passed the phone screening and was invited for an in-person interview right away. What amazed me was the genuine connection I made with my future manager over the phone. Her soothing voice and approachable demeanor made me believe she was the right person to lead my team.
A Welcoming Environment
When I walked into the office for my in-person interview, I met not just my future manager but also two of her colleagues. We connected well individually, and the power of gratitude and kindness became apparent. My thank-you notes impressed everyone, and the offers of employment came soon after. To this day, three months later, I still feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this team. The company not only values my skills but also my humanity.
Unlike my previous jobs, where I felt like I was facing a constant pressure to perform, my current role allows me to learn at my own pace. I appreciate the understanding and support I receive from my team. They are there to support my growth and development, understanding that it takes time to master the intricacies of the job. This supportive environment has been a huge contrast to the previous experiences I had where I felt like I had no voice and was often angry and moody.
Embracing Inclusivity and Kindness
The workplace I'm in now is a truly inclusive environment. As the only Asian in the office, I've never felt that I am at a disadvantage. My colleagues treat me with the same kindness and respect as everyone else. My manager and even senior managers have shown me genuine interest in getting to know me, which is a stark contrast to my previous experiences.
The kindness and inclusivity extend beyond just my immediate colleagues. My manager has gone out of her way to ensure that I feel welcome and heard. She listens to my questions and concerns, and senior managers like Sarah, have extended a hand in friendship. This act of kindness has made me realize the importance of showing gratitude and vulnerability at work. It's changed my perspective from the yesterday of someone who felt suppressed to a happier, more fulfilled individual.
Final Thoughts
My career journey from accounting to customer service has been a transformative one. I've realized that not everyone's path is linear, and sometimes making a detour can lead to a more satisfying destination. The welcoming and supportive environment I now find myself in has truly been a breath of fresh air. If you're considering a change in your career, perhaps now is the right time to find your sweet spot.
